We decided to take a little detour once we left Sault Ste Marie, and headed northeast. Picked to most northern point that we could in Wisconsin and stayed there for the night. On the ride up we just missed a torrential downpour as we took cover at a gas station. A guy on a Honda pulled up and we got to talking. He was a local, and told us about this great little state park where we could camp, and then led us most of the way there before heading back.
The town was called Copper Harbor, and it's a long way from nowhere. The coast along the east side of the island was calm and breath taking. You could see the copper mines from the road below as we rode through Houghton. The roads are better paved than ours, narrow and the twisties were to die for. We saw a bald eagle along the way.
Coming back, the west side of the island was rough and rugged. Many spots had sand across the road that was as bad as our drifing snow, and a little treacherous. We stopped at one scenic lookout, that I want to share with you. Also, we found this great little bar and decided we just had to stop.
The camp ground up there was the nicest, cleanest, fanciest campground you can imagine. Tiled bathrooms w/ showers and big sinks. Really nicer than what I have at home (and we have a nice tiled bathroom!) The beer was cold, the celebratory cigars smokin, the campfire roared, as did we most of the evening before settling in. So far, it's a wonderful ride.
